Government has allowed direct international flights to Agra. With more and more chartered planes ferrying foreign tourists preferring to land at Agra airport instead of Delhi, the city's tourism sector has received a major boost. An average of two flights have been landing in Agra since the beginning of November, increasing ourist inflows by as much as 60 per cent. These tourists prefer to visit Agra alone, evident by the fact that they return to their respective countries for further sightseeing or holidaying, instead of visiting other places in the country, they say.
The new development has also brought some relief to locals involved in tourism-related trade, who had been complaining of "the Delhi tourist lobby" allegedly discouraging foreign tourists from staying overnight in Agra.
