Tourist Attractions in Agra

Agra, the city of Taj, is one of the most sought after travel destinations in India. Almost each and every tourist coming to India on a travel package makes it a point to visit Agra and the amazing Taj Mahal. Apart from the magnificent monument, there are a number of other edifices worth seeing on travel to Agra. Most of these buildings were constructed under the rule of Emperor Akbar and Shah Jahan.

Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal, the Epitome of Love, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A personification of the love of an emperor for his wife, Taj boasts of breathtaking beauty. Its architecture is marvelous as well as unparallel. The monument is the most famous tourist attractions of Agra as well as India.

Agra Fort
Agra fort, spread over an area of around 2.5 km, is situated on the embankments of River Yamuna. Constructed entirely out of red sandstone, this fort comprises of a number of structures inside its complex. Agra fort provides us a peak into the lifestyle of the Mughals during the 6th century.

Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daula
Itmad-ud-Daula is a mausoleum, which houses the body of the father of Noor Jahan, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Mirza Ghiyas Beg was the treasurer, or Itmad-ud-Daulah, under Emperor Jahangir, the husband of Noor Jahan. Thus, his tomb got the name of Itmad-ud-Daulah.

Chini Ka Rauza
Chini Ka Rauza is the tomb of Afzal khan, a Persian poet. He served as a minister in the court of Emperor Shah Jahan. The entire tomb is adorned with brightly colored glazed tiles, giving it the name of Chini ka Rauza.

Agra Excursions

Fatehpur Sikri Fort
Fatehpur Sikri fort was constructed by Emperor Akbar, when he moved his capital to the Fatehpur city. The red sandstone monument boasts of massive gateways and palaces. However, the fort was abandoned only a few years after its construction, because of scarcity of water.

Buland Darwaza
Buland Darwaza is one of the most popular tourist attractions near the city of Agra. It is a huge, imposing gate, perched 173 feet above its pedestal. One of the tallest gates in the world, Buland Darwaza was built by Akbar to celebrate the founding of Aligarh.

Salim Chisti Tomb
The tomb of Salim Chisti is a must-see excursion for everyone visiting Agra. Khwaza Salim Chisti was a Sufi saint, held in reverence by Emperor Akbar. The Naqqashi work embellishing the tomb is awesome. The marble screens enclosing the sanctum are lacy and intricately carved.

Panch Mahal
Panch Mahal is a beautiful monument, believed to have been constructed as a court for the royal ladies. The palace has been built in such a way that it gets plenty of air from each and every side. In front of the palace is a court, which served as the venue for song, dance and other performances.

How to Reach Agra

By Air
Agra city has an airport, situated at a distance of approximately 7 km from the heart of the city. There are direct flights to Delhi, Khajuraho, Varanasi, etc.

By Road
The main bus stand of Agra is known as the Eidgah bus stand. One can catch buses to Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura, Fatehpur-Sikri, etc. The bus stand at the Agra Fort can be used for catching buses to Mathura and Delhi.

By Rail/Train
Agra Cantonment station is the main railway station of the city and has direct trains to Delhi, Varanasi and most of the cities in Rajasthan. Trains like Palace on Wheel, Shatabdi, Rajdhani, and Taj Express also visit the city.
